Metadata: Skomer Marine Conservation Zone ( MCZ ) - Territorial Fish Species Monitoring
Abstract:
In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. Monitoring of territorial fish is part of an on-going survey was carried out in the Skomer Marine Conservation Zone using volunteer divers to assess the abundance of territorial fish species and the habitat characteristics of these populated areas. The survey methods were developed through trials in 1997 and the first survey was completed in 2001 this was affected by heavy plankton bloom and therefore repeat survey was completed in 2002. In 2005 survey reviewed the methods in order to allow improved statistical analysis but allowed comparison of the 2002 data. The methods were also developed to be suitable for volunteer dive teams. Seabed and Habitat data were collected for each site using Seasearch methods to support the fish data. The fish data entered is an average for two habitats (10m and 15m) and represents the number of fish per 90 m2. In 2009 Habitat Descriptions were created using Phase 1 SeaSearch habitat description methods. These surveys were done by NRW and volunteers as in previous year. 2013 data is currently held by the Skomer Island Marine Team (Assistant Marine Conservation Officer, Pembrokeshire Team) and is to be entered into Marine Recorder.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Visual counts of a fish along a swum transect, distance- 30-50m. Only species from a fixed list are recorded (Labrus bergylta, Labrus mixtus, Ctenolabrus rupestris, Ctenolabrus exoletus, Crenilabrus melops, Thorogobius epphipiatus, Parablennius gattorugine, Pholis gunnellus, Myoxcephualus scorpius and Taurulus bubalis). The transects are swum at various sites around the Reserve and at 5 m depth bands - 5, 10 15 20 and 25 m. BCD Drop down video surveillance has also been used. - 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2013 - abundance data - 2007 - drop down video data There is medium confidence in this dataset as volunteers used to record the data therefore species ID may vary. |
