Metadata: Marine Intertidal Phase 1 Database
Abstract:
This is a database of Marine intertidal Phase 1 survey data, which can be queried to provide information on biotope, species distribution, site details, uses and impacts, target notes and conservation interests. Following the completion of the intertidal project in 2007 the database was transferred to Apex software to be made available internally on the former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) intranet. The intertidal phase 1 survey was undertaken to provide an integrated information resource for Local Authority structure and development plans on the coast and for the consideration of planning applications. The data collected is also used to provide regional information about habitat and biotope distribution, assessment of sites as possible Sites of Special Scientific Importance (SSSIs), a basis of sensitivity mapping and in the production and evaluation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). The database itself aims to provide a storage system to effectively store the survey results whilst providing a convenient way to view and manipulate the data collected. Data validated to ensure it's entered onto the database correctly. The database has been designed to keep data entry errors to a minimum e.g. majority of data entry are taken from drop down menus, percentage values must add up to 100%, many fields are mandatory, and duplicate entries are not allowed. Each record in the database is checked against the data collection form by the data imputer and by a member of the survey team. A further validation is carried out when the data is cross checked with the digital map to ensure that the database and maps agree.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Survey methodology is based on 'Handbook for Marine Intertidal Phase 1 Biotope Mapping Survey'. Biotopes are based on the JNCC report `Marine Nature Conservation Review: marine biotope classification for Britain and Ireland. Volumes 1 and 2. Version 97.06'. Working at a scale of 1:5,000, field survey is based on using a combination of aerial photographs and Ordnance Survey (OS) maps as a template on to which the substratum and biotopes (habitat and associated biological community) are drawn. Features and other information that are not map-able are described in target notes, a site description provides general information on the whole site and further information on biotopes and species are recorded on the survey form. The database is used for storage, display and manipulation of data collected during the survey and can be used to generate site reports. It is also possible to view and query cartographic data held by the GIS from within the database. The database was developed in Microsoft Access and consists of a front end containing all the tools necessary for the user to input; edit; print and query the data, and the back end, containing only the data itself which is placed on a network server, where it is secure and backed up regularly. |
