Metadata: Epiflora Diversity Within Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Beds on the Welsh Coast
Abstract:
Seagrass beds develop in intertidal and shallow subtidal areas on sands and muds. They may be found in marine inlets and bays but also in other areas, such as lagoons and channels, which are sheltered from significant wave action. Eelgrass (Zostera marina), is considered to be scarce (present in 16-100 ten km squares) is protected through the EC Habitats Directive and is classed as a UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Priority Habitat. Zostera beds is also on the OSPAR List of threatened and/or declining species and habitats. The purpose of this data capture was to monitor Zostera marine habitat and condition, and this dataset is a collation results of a survey investigating the epifloral diversity within eelgrass beds around the coast of Wales.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Zostera marina was collected at four sites over a four week period in July and August 2002. At each site five stations were sampled. At each station two divers were deployed from a small boat onto a random point within the Zostera bed, which was typically at 2-3 meters depth. From this point a tape measure was extended in a randomly selected compass direction. At five set randomly generated distances from the point a 30 by 30 cm quadrat was placed on the substratum. The depth was recorded and samples of Zostera were collected and taken back to the laboratory for analysis. The samples were fixed in 1-5% formalin to prevent deterioration. In the laboratory 10 leaves from each sample were examined for epiflora. |
