Metadata: Monitoring of Subtidal Rocky Reef in Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC)
Abstract:
This dataset consists of the results from an integrated monitoring strategy on a site level carried out to provide an overview of the status of reef feature within the Pembrokeshire MarineSpecial Area of Conservation (SAC) as a whole. Work is concentration on tide-swept infralittoral and circalittoral rock. 7 sites across the SAC selected and permanent monitoring quadrat established within each of the biotope complexes. Within the upper parts of the Milford Haven sites were established at Beggars Reach; Warrior and Dockyard Bank. Near to the mouth of the Haven; sites were established at Chapel Reef; Thorn Island; and Junkos Reef. A site was also established within the off-shore islands of The Smalls.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | At each site quadrats were generally established in rows of 4 quadrats at 2 or 3 depths at each site. A standard recording methodology was devised to allow comparisons to be made of the data collected at any site in any year. 0.5m x 0.5m quadrats are attached to the permanent markers. An initial assessment of the distribution of species within the quadrat as a whole is made. The abundant/dominant species are recorded first followed by the rare and cryptic species using a series of timed cell frequency counts is then undertaken to assess species diversity. 4 successive counting periods of 5 minutes each is taken noting presence of species from within each cell. Counting continues until a total period of 20 minutes. Where species cannot be identified; specimens are collected from outside the quadrat and identified later. A photo is taken of the species in-situ. A specimen catalogue for the whole SAC is also collated. Where time allows either a video of the quadrat is made of images of the quadrat are taken. Still images have been captured from video for each cell and 'stitched' to make a single image of the whole quadrat. Detailed methodologies and descriptions and variations at specific sites can be found in Marine Monitoring Report 25b (standard operating procedures 15). The majority of QA occurs at Thorn Island and allows for a subset of quadrats to be surveyed and compared prior to the data collection exercise. This allows all surveyors to refresh their skills and ensure species id is consistent. A subset of all quadrats are either photographed or recorded using video and the images archived to allow quadrats to be re-evaluated if necessary. Temperature and/or salinity loggers are also continuously logging at most of these site. Sponge thickness measures are also taken at Warrior Site. Analysis of the quadrat data may also be carried out in PRIMER. |
