Metadata: Surveys of Harbours, Rias and Estuaries in Southern Britain - Loughor Estuary and the Burry Inlet
Abstract:
The Nature Conservancy Council commissioned the Field Studies Council to undertake studies of the marine inlets of southern Britain, including harbours, rias and estuaries, in order to gain information on the ecosystems present. The study took place between 1985 and 1988 and covered 24 inlets. This dataset contains the results of a survey of Loughor Estuary (incorporating the Burry Inlet). The purpose of this data capture was to describe areas in terms of their physical attributes; to review the results of previous studies; to review marine resource usage e.g. fisheries, diving activities etc; to catalogue available information and to collect information and photographs on the habitats and species present.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | A review of available information was undertaken before field work commenced. 23 intertidal and 3 subtidal dredge sites were sampled during the survey of Loughor estuary with the sites chosen because of their known nature conservation importance. Both hard substratum and sediment shores were sampled. On hard substratum a systematic description was made of the abundance of species in the main habitats/communities present at different heights on the open shore. Records were also made from unusual habitats e.g. gullies, rockpools etc and if time was short it was this aspect that was prioritised. On sediment shores the habitats present were recorded by making notes of habitat characteristics, using a spade to dig over an area to look for conspicuous fauna, and sieving sediment to find less conspicuous fauna. Core samples were also taken at most sites in for macrofaunal analysis. To sample sublittoral sediments a fishing boat was hired to do some dredging and the dredge contents were sieved through a 1mm sieve. Notes of depth of water, volume of sediment etc were also made. |
