Metadata: Mapping Marine Benthic Biodiversity in Wales
Abstract:
The UK is committed through international agreements and European obligations to the establishment of an ecologically coherent network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to conserve marine ecosystems and biodiversity. The identification of areas of high biodiversity may be helpful for planning both Marine Protected Areas and for Marine Spatial Planning and can contribute to an ecosystem-based approach to the management of our seas. Furthermore, identifying which areas are most important for biodiversity not only yields benefits for the maintenance of ecosystem structure and functioning but can also enable cost effective prioritisation of areas for marine protection. Each data layer produced in relation to this project has its own metadata entry. The main objective of the project is to provide maps indicating different levels of biodiversity in Welsh waters (including the intertidal). The data covers the Welsh coastline from mean high water to 12 nautical miles offshore.

| Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 8741 |
| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Mapping Marine Benthic Biodiversity in Wales |
| Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | Identifying marine biodiversity hotspots in Wales |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | NRW_DS111816 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | 4f4c4942-4343-5764-6473-313131383136 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1968-01-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2008-12-31 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | A method was developed specifically for application to the territorial waters of Wales. This comprised four key stages: 1) data collation and quality assessment; 2) assessment of appropriate scale of grid cells; 3) analysis and generation of biodiversity measures; and 4) validation measures and confidence assessment. This project builds on previous studies at a UK-wide and regional level (Hiscock and Breckels 2007, Langmead et al. 2008) to develop an approach for identifying marine biodiversity hotspots and apply it to Wales' sea area. Confidence rating were applied in the final analysis, based on the quality and quantity of the data used and confidence GIS layers produced. |
