Metadata: Ground Monitoring of Common Scoter Melinitta nigra in Carmarthen Bay 2008 - 2009
Abstract:
Carmarthen Bay Special Protection Area (SPA) was classified as the UK's first SPA in 2003 on the basis of holding at least 1% (16,000 individuals: Wetlands International 2006) of the biogeographic population of common scoter Melanitta nigra. Common Scoter feed on bivalves and other invertebrates such as polychaetes and amphipods which are found in abundance in the shallow waters (less than 10m) in Carmarthen Bay. Common scoter are also listed as a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species. Former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), now part of Natural Resources Wales (NRW), has supported ground based counts since 1996, following the Sea Empress oil spill. The purpose of this data capture was to carry out one scoter count of Carmarthen Bay in January and February 2009. This work feeds in to the condition monitoring and surveillance of Carmarthen Bay SPA and contributes to Common Standards Monitoring.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Counts were made at 4 locations: Rhossili, Pembrey, Pendine and Amroth. Rhossili was visited at least once and the other sites at least twice. Methods for counting are outlined in Banks et al (2004, 2007). All relevant local conditions were recorded and counts were only taken during suitable weather and visibility conditions and where possible counts coincided with high tide. An experienced counter using high quality binoculars and telescope was employed. However, no spatial reference were provided with data for statistical analysis. It is assumed for the purpose of the metadata that samples were collected using British National Grid. A sustained program of monitoring scoters in Carmarthen bay has been in place since 1997. |
