Metadata: Collection Activity and Crab Survey in the Menai Strait (2009)
Abstract:
Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are strictly protected sites designated under the EC Habitats Directive. In the Menai Strait and Conwy Bay SAC the relevant Annex I intertidal habitat features are Mudflats and sandflats not covered by seawater at low tide and Reefs. Specific areas of interest include areas of tide-swept bedrock and boulders and areas of tide-swept Fucus serratus on mixed sediment along the Menai Strait. In previous studies it was noted that a portion of the boulders had been turned by bait collectors. Surveys to assess bait collection activity and crab counts were carried out along the length of the shoreline of the Menai Strait using student volunteers. Data quality and confidence considered high.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are strictly protected sites designated under the EC Habitats Directive. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The intertidal zone of each site was divided into approximately 200 m long sections and given 'shore block' codes. In each shore block the amount of collecting activity was observed for 10 minutes and recorded; winkle collectors and peeler collectors were noted as well as any unknown activities. The boulder turning frequency was also recorded for each shore block. In addition, the surveyors worked along the lower-mid shore evaluating the number of turned boulders; 30 boulders were checked in each shore block. Crab counts were also recorded; juvenile Carcinus maenas, adult Carcinus maenas and juvenile Cancer pagurus. |
