Metadata: Aerial Monitoring of Common Scoter Melinitta nigra in Carmarthen Bay 2010 - 2011
Abstract:
Carmarthen Bay Special Protection Area (SPA) was classified as the UK's first SPA in 2003 on the basis of holding at least 1% (16,000 individuals: Wetlands International 2006) of the biogeographic population of common scoter Melanitta nigra. Common Scoter feed on bivalves and other invertebrates such as polychaetes and amphipods which are found in abundance in the shallow waters (less than 10 m) in Carmarthen Bay. Common scoter are also listed as a UK BAP species. Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) has supported ground based counts since 1996, following the Sea Empress oil spill. The purpose of this data capture was to collect information regarding the abundance and distribution of common scoters in the Carmarthen Bay SPA.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | A sustained program of monitoring scoters in Carmarthen bay has been in place since 1997 (Stewart et al, 1997, Cranswick et al, 1998, WWT 2003). Data was captured using a visual aerial survey of the Carmarthen Bay SPA on the 6th March 2011, counts were obtained by two surveyors concurrently. The survey used distance sampling technique (assigning birds or rafts of birds to distance bands A-D) with 15 line transects spaced at 2 km intervals. Data was also collected on additional bird and marine mammal species. All staff involved were trained, and confidence levels were provided as part of the report. |
