Metadata: Contaminants data from sediment cores collected in the North Sea between 2023 and 2024 and the Celtic Sea during 2023
Abstract:
These sample data are from sediment cores collected using a NIOZ (Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research design) Box Corer during 3 surveys conducted by the Research Vessel (RV) Cefas Endeavour. Sample were analysed for and data presented for Metals, Rare Earth Elements (REE), Organotins (OT), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE – Flame Retardants), Polychlorinated Biphenyls Ethers (PCB – Industrial Chemicals), Organochlorine Pesticides (OCP), and Per & Poly Fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). Additional surface scrapes were taken from sediment grabs using a Day Grab during the latter two surveys (CEND172023 & CEND092024).

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | These data are from the following areas and surveys. - CEND072023 – North Sea (Farnes Deep, Fulmar, & Dogger Bank) – May 20- th- to June 10- th- , 2023. - CEND172023 – Celtic Sea – November 9- th- to November 28- th- , 2023. - CEND092024 – North Sea (Farnes Deep, Fulmar, & Dogger Bank) - May 24- th- to June 9- th- , 2024. At each station within a survey a NIOZ Box Corer was deployed collecting core up to a maximum sediment depth of 30cm, a metal cylinder was used to take 10cm diameter sub core which were sliced at 5cm intervals. Samples were stored frozen at approximately -20 Deg C in pentane rinsed glassed jars. The surface scrapes were taken from grab samples collected using a Day Grab. A representative subsample was transferred from the grab using a pentane rinsed metal spoon into pentane rinsed glassed jars and were stored frozen at approximately -20 Deg C. Metals and REE samples underwent freeze drying and were sieved to less than 63um fraction, followed by microwave total sediment digestion using a mixture of hydrofluoric, nitric, and hydrochloric acid before analyses. Analysis was performed using Inductive Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and ICP - Optical/Atom Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES/AES). Organotin sample underwent methanol followed by hexane extraction before analysis by Gas Chromatography with Flame Photometric Detection (GC-FPD). PAH samples underwent alkaline saponification before analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). PBDE, PCB, and OCP samples underwent acetone and hexane extraction before analysis by Gas Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). PFAS samples underwent acetonitrile extraction before analysis by High Performance Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS). A data point can potentially have multiple Quality Flags (QFlags) which will be semicolon separated. Definition of each QFlag can be found in the QFlag text file attached to this record. This dataset was produced by work supported jointly by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) lead NC40 Offshore Marine Monitoring project funded by Department of Environment, Food, & Rural Affairs (Defra) under its flagship marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (mNCEA) programme and by the Defra funded Carbon Management Project (project number MRD333).
