Abstract:
These sample data are from sediment cores collected in the North Sea and the Celtic Seas on three surveys undertaken between 2023 and 2024 using a NIOZ (Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research design) Box Corer during 3 surveys conducted by the Research Vessel (RV) Cefas Endeavour. Sample were analysed for and data presented for Particle Size Analysis (PSA).

At each station within a survey a NIOZ Box Corer was deployed collecting up to 5 individual cores to a maximum sediment depth of 30cm. A 10cm diameter sub core was taken from cores designated for lead-210 and organic carbon & nitrogen (OCN), as well as the core for contaminants. The lead-210 ( 210Pb) and OCN core was sliced at 2cm intervals for CEND072023 and CEND172023, and 1cm for CEND092024. The contaminants core was sliced a 5cm intervals for all surveys. Full PSA was performed on slices from the lead-210 ( 210Pb), and the OCN cores, and a 63µm split on slices from the contaminant cores. Additional Day Grab samples were taken on CEND072023. Full PSA was performed on these samples. Full PSA sediment samples were defrosted prior to analysis, and a representative subsample was taken. The sediment samples were processed following the PSA methodology recommended by the National Marine Biological Analytical Quality Control (NMBAQC) Scheme (Mason, 2022).Laser diffraction is carried out on the <2mm sediment. The remainder of the subsample is wet split using a 1mm sieve. The >1mm sediment is oven dried then dry sieved at half phi intervals. The <1mm sediment is oven dried and the weight recorded. The sieve and laser data are then merged to produce a full Particle Size Distribution (PSD) at half phi intervals. Gradistat software (Blott and Pye, 2001) was used to produce all sediment statistics (e.g., mean, mode, skewness). Each sample was classified using modified Folk description as defined by Long (2006). 63 split sediment samples were defrosted prior to analysis and then wet split using a 63 µm sieve. The >63 µm sediment fraction is then oven-dried and the weight is recorded. The <63 µm sediment fraction is freeze-dried, the weight is recorded and then sent for metals analysis. The percentage mud is then calculated by ( <63 µm / >63 µm + <63 µm )*100. A data point can potentially have multiple Quality Flags (QFlags) which will be semicolon separated. Definition of each QFlag can be found in the QFlag text file attached to this record.
