Metadata: Thames Inshore Survey data 2022 to 2024
Abstract:
Thames inshore survey data collected comprises of: Distribution, size composition, and relative abundance of all fish, cephalopod, and shellfish species encountered; Abundance-at-age data for juvenile sole and plaice; Epibenthic bycatch taxa and shrimp catch volumes; Surface water temperature and salinity at each trawl station; Marine litter data and environmental samples (eDNA, water biogeochemistry). Consistent use of a light 2-m beam trawl, with stations and methods aligned to historic Young Fish Survey (YFS) protocols to ensure comparability of data across years. Sampling inshore locations for small and young fish, focusing on key commercial species such as juvenile sole and plaice, but also recording other fish, cephalopods, shellfish, and epibenthic bycatch taxa. Additional opportunistic marine oceanographic and environmental data collection using surface water samples and conductivity temperature and depth profiles from a SAIV sensor (CTD) and concerto RBR.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | These data comprise a recent (2022–2024) partial reinstatement of the YFS (`Young Fish Survey Data 1981 to 2010`_) with the addition of oceanographic and environmental data collection. The survey used commercial inshore vessels deployed at fixed (prime) stations, towing the 2-m beam trawl for a duration of 10-minutes. A SAIV mini CTD and RBR Concerto (RBR) sensor were deployed before or after fishing. Anthropogenic litter was retained for subsequent analysis from all trawls, apart from large and heavy items which were processed on board the vessel. Surface water collection for biogeochemical analysis and eDNA was conducted when required, determined by project sampling protocols All fish, cephalopods and shellfish caught were identified to species, or the highest taxonomic level and measured to 0.5 cm. Age samples and biological parameters were collected from sole and plaice catches, in accordance with length stratified targets, and used to produce age-compositions. All trawl catch related data were subsequently input into the Cefas Fishing Survey System (FSS) database (2022-2023) and the Scientific Fisheries Systems (SFS) in 2024. The 2024 benthic data are currently undergoing quality assurance and should be interpreted with particular care. .. _`young fish survey data 1981 to 2010`: https://data.cefas.co.uk/view/19682 |
