Metadata: Forel-Ule Index (FUI) outputs and plume extent in England and Wales between 1997 and 2022 and North East Atlantic between 1997 and 2018
Abstract:
Datasets used to describe water quality in UK waters and the Northeast Atlantic between 1997-2022 based on remote sensing products. Forel-Ule Index (FUI), a 21 class colour comparator, was used to classify water into different water optical types, derived from ocean colour satellite data, FUI can be also used as a proxy for water quality, as it relates to biological, chemical and physical properties of the water. For more information on Forel-Ule (FU), please visit this paper: `https://www.mdpi.com/2072-4292/14/10/2375T`_ .. _`https://www.mdpi.com/2072-4292/14/10/2375t`: https://www.mdpi.com/2072-4292/14/10/2375

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | 1. Forel-Ule outputs This is a gridded dataset showing the Forel-Ule (FU) Index. Two products were used for FU calculation: 1.1. Sentinel-3 OLCI Level 1 data: Sources: `https://data.eumetsat.int/product/EO:EUM:DAT:0409`_ and `https://data.eumetsat.int/product/EO:EUM:DAT:0577`_ Sentinel-3 L1 data was atmospherically corrected using Polymer atmospheric correction to derive water leaving reflectance (Rw). Rw was used to calculate FU Index in Python based on the GitHub repository here: `https://github.com/CefasRepRes/FUME`_ The daily FU Index values were resampled to a regular grid and aggregated to monthly composites using mean FU per pixel. Statistics per pixel between 2017-2018 were calculated using mean monthly FU composites, resulting in: FU Mean, FU Maximum, FU Minimum, which are shown in the associated ArcGIS Story Map. Frequencies of the optical water categories, split into estuaries, near shore, coastal, mixed offshore and offshore, based on FU classes were calculated using mean FU monthly inputs between 2017-2018. These categories were determined using the Citclops projec (`http://www.citclops.eu/water-colour/measuring-water-colour`_). The categories are described below: - Estuaries FR = Frequency of the Forel-Ule >= 18 - Near Shore FR = Frequency of the Forel-Ule < 18 and Forel-Ule >= 14 - Coastal FR = Frequency of the Forel-Ule < 14 and Forel-Ule >= 10 - Mixed Offshore FR = Frequency of the Forel-Ule < 10 and Forel-Ule >= 6 - Offshore FR = Frequency of the Forel-Ule < 6 Spatial resolution of the above data is 300m and EPSG 4326. 1.2. Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OCCCI) derived FU for northeast Atlantic between 1997-2018 OCCCI derived Forel-Ule global data from Pitarch et al., 2019: `https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.904266`_were clipped to the northeast Atlantic, between 1997-2018. Mean, maximum and minimum were computed from the monthly mean FU inputs, which correspond to the below layers in the ArcGIS Story Map. Similarly frequency of Citclops water optical categories, as described in 1.1, were calculated for OCCCI mean monthly FU data per pixel. Spatial resolution is 4km and EPSG 4326 FU Min 1997-2018 = Minimum Forel-Ule calculated from mean monthly Forel-Ule inputs FU Mean 1997-2018 = Mean Forel-Ule calculated from mean monthly Forel-Ule inputs FU Max 1997-2018 = Maximum Forel-Ule calculated from mean monthly Forel-Ule inputs Estuaries 1997-2018 = Frequency of the Forel-Ule >=18 Nearshore 1997-2018 = Frequency of the Forel-Ule <18 and Forel-Ule>=14 Coastal 1997-2018 = Frequency of the Forel-Ule <14 and Forel-Ule>=10 Mixed-offshore 1997-2018 = Frequency of the Forel-Ule <10 and Forel-Ule>=6 Offshore 1997-2018 = Frequency of the Forel-Ule <6 2. Water quality survey sites Positions of Marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment water monitoring sites for Liverpool Bay and Thames. 3. Plume extent for England and Wales derived from FU calculated from Sentinel-3 OLCI ocean colour data (1.1. above) (2017-2022) and OCCCI (1997-2018) data (1.2. above) This dataset shows the extent of ocean colour derived river plumes in England and Wales and northeast Atlantic, based on different FU thresholds described below: 3.1. Sentinel-3 (S3) River Plume Frequency of a Typical Winter Extent 2017-2022 Frequency of monthly FU >= 10 calculated for 2017 - 2022 and scaled between 0 - 1 using 1.1. data. Pixels with frequency > 0.3 were extracted, vectorised and cleaned to derived the so called "typical winter extent" plume. Resolution is ~300m. 3.2. S3 River Plume Average Extent 2017-2022 FU > 10 pixels were extracted using 1.1. data (FU Mean), vectorised and cleaned to derive the so called "river plume average extent". Resolution is ~300m. 3.3. Plume Mean 1997-2018 (4km from OCCCI derived FUI for NE Atlantic) of a Typical Winter Extent Frequency of monthly FU >= 10 calculated for 1997-2018 and scaled between 0-1 using 1.2 data. Pixels with frequency > 0.3 were extracted, vectorised and cleaned to derived the so called "typical winter extent" plume. Resolution is ~ 4km. 3.4. Plume frequency 1997-2018 (4km from OCCCI derived FUI for NE Atlantic) FU > 10 pixels were extracted using 1.2 data (FU Mean), vectorised and cleaned to derive the so called "river plume average extent". Resolution is ~ 4km. The above data are included in the two web maps applications: `https://giserver.cefas.co.uk/portal/home/item.html?id=1ff56e1a333143eeb904af61dda223dd`_ `https://giserver.cefas.co.uk/portal/home/item.html?id=17aea80e483448ef82ffc905733988bd`_ and are served in the UK Water Quality Story Map as a web application here: `Measuring UK Marine Water Quality (cefas.co.uk)`_ .. _`https://data.eumetsat.int/product/eo:eum:dat:0409`: https://data.eumetsat.int/product/EO:EUM:DAT:0409 .. _`https://data.eumetsat.int/product/eo:eum:dat:0577`: https://data.eumetsat.int/product/EO:EUM:DAT:0577 .. _`https://github.com/cefasrepres/fume`: https://github.com/CefasRepRes/FUME .. _`http://www.citclops.eu/water-colour/measuring-water-colour`: http://www.citclops.eu/water-colour/measuring-water-colour .. _`https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/pangaea.904266`: https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.904266 .. _`https://giserver.cefas.co.uk/portal/home/item.html?id=1ff56e1a333143eeb904af61dda223dd`: https://giserver.cefas.co.uk/portal/home/item.html?id=8bb3f6c7f48b49b08c14881a4aea837b .. _`https://giserver.cefas.co.uk/portal/home/item.html?id=17aea80e483448ef82ffc905733988bd`: https://giserver.cefas.co.uk/portal/home/item.html?id=1ff56e1a333143eeb904af61dda223dd .. _`measuring uk marine water quality (cefas.co.uk)`: https://giserver.cefas.co.uk/portal/apps/storymaps/stories/ea1513495d9c41658c8243c70081ca2c |
