Metadata: England and Wales salmon fisheries: final statistics 2025
Abstract:
Final data from England and Wales on the status of salmon stocks and fisheries for the 2025 season. The dataset includes historical time-series data extending back to 1971. These national-level data are provided by the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales. Further information on the methods used to compile and assess these data is available in `Assessment of Salmon Stocks and Fisheries in England and Wales`_. .. _`assessment of salmon stocks and fisheries in england and wales`: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/68b818fcd723ba6f74dba935/SalmonReport-2024-background.pdf

| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1971-01-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2025-12-31 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The annual assessment of salmon stocks and fisheries is undertaken to fulfil national and international reporting obligations. Provisional data are collated and analysed each year in time for the annual meeting of the ICES Working Group on North Atlantic Salmon (WGNAS), which normally meets in March, and to support the ICES advice provided ahead of the annual meeting of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO) in early June. The data presented here are the final validated data for the 2025 season. They incorporate any revisions arising from data validation and quality assurance processes and supersede the provisional dataset previously supplied for ICES WGNAS assessments and NASCO reporting. Net and fixed engine data are typically based on complete returns and are generally subject to little, if any, subsequent revision. Rod catch data, on the other hand, are initially based on returns received up to an agreed cut-off date, usually in early February, and may subsequently be revised to incorporate late returns and final checks. The final dataset reflects all available information following these validation procedures. An account of the methods used to generate and compile these data is provided in `Assessment of Salmon Stocks and Fisheries in England and Wales`_. Annex 5 describes how ICES uses these national data in international stock assessments. Commercial coastal fisheries in England and Wales have not targeted or retained salmon since 2020 following the introduction of the National Salmon and Sea Trout Protection Byelaws in 2019. These data have been compiled jointly by staff from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) Salmon, Freshwater and Estuarine Fish Team and fisheries personnel from the Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales/Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru (NRW/CNC). Monitoring and assessment of salmon stocks are funded by Defra and the Welsh Government. Thanks are extended to the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust for providing data relating to the River Frome. .. _`assessment of salmon stocks and fisheries in england and wales`: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/68b818fcd723ba6f74dba935/SalmonReport-2024-background.pdf |
