Metadata: Reducing discards: Square-mesh codends in combination with square-mesh release panels 2007/08 - Fisheries Science Partnership
Abstract:
The main objective of this FSP project was to demonstrate that square-mesh codends in combination with multiple square-mesh panels can effectively reduce discards in he SW beam trawl fisheries

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | The main objective of this FSP project was to demonstrate that square-mesh codends in combination with multiple square-mesh panels can effectively reduce discards in he SW beam trawl fisheries |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | A successful ‘discard-reducing’ combination of square-mesh codend and square-mesh release panels was developed in 2006 by the Brixham-based skipper Mike Sharp (FV Lady T Emiel, BM 2000). Skipper Sharp successfully used his particular combination of square-mesh panels and codend on a commercial basis onboard the FV Lady T Emiel during 2006/07, and Cefas observers working aboard his vessel demonstrated that these particular gear modification reduced discards by around 60%. In May 2007, Skipper Sharp was awarded first prize in the Cefas-sponsored ‘Clean Fishing’ competition (https://www.cefas.co.uk) for his discard-reduction design. This competition aimed to engage the SW industry in developing effective solutions to reduce discard levels in their fisheries. This FSP project takes skipper Mike Sharp’s winning ‘discard-reduction’ design and evaluates it’s efficacy on two other commercial twin-beam trawlers (Plymouth-based FV Admiral Grenville and the Newlyn-based FV Twilight III). The evaluation is based on a full week’s charter on each of the two vessels. Throughout the sea trips, the catches from a standard beam-trawl were directly compared with a modified beam trawl, i.e. fitted with the square-mesh panels and square-mesh codend). |
