Metadata: Survey data for marine litter biofoulers from the North Sea, Irish Sea, English Channel between December 2020 and July 2024
Abstract:
The data includes survey names, station names, replicate details including date, depth, latitude and longitude. The samples were collected from UK waters between December 2020 and July 2024 to analyse the biofouling communities living on the seafloor litter, with a secondary aim of identifying non-native species among the fouling communities. Survey data for trawl samples taken on the following surveys: CEND 18/20 : December 2020 : 8 replicates, CEND 06/21 : April 2021 : 12 replicates, CEND 15/22 : September 2022 : 13 replicates, CEND 01/23 : January 2023 : 12 replicates, CEND 04/23 : March 2023 : 1 replicate, CEND 09/23 : July 2023 : 13 replicates, CEND 10/23 : July 2023 : 2 replicates, CEND 14/23 : September 2023 : 9 replicates, CEND 19/23 : December 2023 : 6 replicates, CEND 04/24 : March 2024 : 6 replicates, CEND 12/24 : July 2024 : 6 replicates.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Samples were collected between December 2020 and July 2024 as part of the French and English International Bottom Trawl Surveys on the RV *Cefas Endeavour*. These demersal fish stock assessment campaigns used a combination of Granton Trawl, Jackson JTS610 light otter trawl and a 4-metre beam trawl with 40 mm cod-end in UK waters, with hauls typically lasting around 30 minutes at a speed of five knots. In cases where sonar detection suggested high fish densities, the haul duration was occasionally reduced to avoid overfilling the net. This study was conducted over a large section of the northeast Atlantic, ranging from the Southern North Sea to the English Channel, Celtic and Irish Seas. Due to the sampling methodology, we cannot rule out the possibility that some of the seafloor litter may have been collected during the trawl’s descent or ascent through the water column. |
