Metadata: Plankton Imager (Pi-10) Meta data collected on RV Cefas Endeavour
Abstract:
Plankton Imager (Pi-10) data collected during RV Cefas Endeavour surveys. Data are images, separated by ten minute bins, and may be either unzipped, or zipped as tar files for that ten minute bin (zipping is a setting that can be turned on/off by the plankton imager acquisition software). Each image is directly named with the instrument ID, datetime and GPS data are embedded in the file metadata EXIF as decimal latitude longitude. These data provide an overview of where, when and how many images were captured by the plankton imager. Each row represents a 10-minute bin of images. The raw image data are stored on azure. The ‘BLOB’ column in the data indicates which folder within the azure container the data are stored. The HITS column indicates the number of images within that ten-minute bin and the MISSES column indicates the number of images not stored (e.g. due to date rate). The MISSES are needed to resolve abundance data in much the same way as splitting a physical plankton sample. Note, older data on an earlier prototype are available on request. The deployment of the Pi-10 is continuous and these data are updated every 3 months.

| Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 37140 |
| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Plankton Imager (Pi-10) Meta data collected on RV Cefas Endeavour |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | CEFASf06381c1-8e7b-48ec-9295-389922b1f58e |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | CEFAS22068 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2023-09-28 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2025-11-01 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The Plankton Imager is a high-speed, colour line-scan camera system that continuously samples mesozooplankton by pumping seawater through a flow-through chamber and imaging every passing particle in real-time (see: `https://doi.org/10.1101/2025.01.27.635045`_ for a detailed method). These blobs hold raw survey data uploaded directly from terabyte-scale physical hard drives following vessel-based surveys. Uploads are typically performed via Azure Data Box or equivalent secure bulk transfer mechanisms. These images may be classified manually or using machine learning. This data resource is for the raw image data only. For examples of classifiers see the rapid-plankton gui (`https://github.com/CefasRepRes/rapid-plankton`_ which demonstrates the real-time edge-ai classification of Pi-10 images as well as cloud-based classification. Data enquiries may be made available on request for the entirety of the data or per blob. Preservation of the original collected data structure is intentional at this stage. Data are uploaded without modification. No classification, filtering, or relabelling is performed. Integrity is maintained through Azure Blob Storage checksums and controlled write access. These containers represent the authoritative source data. All downstream processing, labelling, and machine learning workflows trace provenance back to these raw uploads. Quality StatementData quality reflects instrument performance and survey conditions at the time of collection. No post-collection quality filtering has been applied. Users must assess suitability for derived use. Bubbles frequently pollute the raw images. .. _`https://doi.org/10.1101/2025.01.27.635045`: https://doi.org/10.1101/2025.01.27.635045 .. _`https://github.com/cefasrepres/rapid-plankton`: https://github.com/CefasRepRes/rapid-plankton |
