Metadata: Irish Sea Fish Egg Production Survey 2008
Abstract:
This survey series took place from 2006 to 2010 and consisted of 15 voyages. Plankton samples were collected at each site on a planned survey grid. This data consists of the numbers of fish eggs and larvae, along with associated positional data and volumes filtered. A fine mesh (80 micron) 'PUP' sampler, attached to the frame of the Gulf VII sampler, was used to collect plankton samples for analysis of zooplankton species. These were analysed under Cefas contract C3576 and are recorded separately.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The main aims for these cruises were to; - Conduct a plankton survey using a 76cm Gulf VII plankton sampler to determine the distribution and abundance of cod (- Gadus Morhua- )- ,- haddock (- Melanogrammus aeglefinus- ), and plaice (- Pleuronectes platessa- ) eggs. - Remove stage 1A and 1B gadoid-like eggs from fresh plankton samples at sea. To measure, stage and preserve these eggs in ethanol prior to species identification using a DNA technique on return to the laboratory (CEFAS). CELTIC VOYAGER Cruise 05/2008: A Gulf VII plankton sampler, fitted with a 40cm aperture nosecone and 270µm mesh net was used for the first four stations with an auxiliary 80µm mesh ‘Pup’ net attached. Fish eggs in early development stages and between 1.10 and 1.75mm diameter were removed and individually preserved in ethanol. A total of 991 eggs were obtained during this cruise. CELTIC VOYAGER Cruise 07/2008: A Gulf VII plankton sampler was fitted with a 35cm aperture nosecone and 270µm mesh net for the first 7 stations. As clogging of this net (with phytoplankton) was making egg sorting extremely difficult it was decided to change to a 425µm mesh net which was used for the remainder of the survey. An auxiliary 80µm mesh 'Pup' net was also attached to the sampler frame. Ninety-nine plankton stations were completed, covering the whole Irish Sea from 53º 00'N to 55º 00'N. Fish eggs in early stages of development and between 1.1 and 1.75mm diameter were removed and individually preserved in ethanol. A total of 834 eggs were obtained during this cruise. CEFAS ENDEAVOUR Cruise 02/2008: A Gulf VII plankton sampler, fitted with a 40cm aperture nosecone and 270µm mesh net was used during this survey, with an auxiliary 80µm mesh ‘Pup’ net attached. A Valeport CTD mounted on the sampler, provided ‘real time’ flow-meter data. 105 plankton stations were completed, covering the whole Irish Sea from 53º 00'N to 55º 00'N.The Valeport CTD system caused numerous problems throughout the survey. Fish eggs in early development stages and between 1.1 and 1.75mm diameter were removed and individually preserved in ethanol. A total of 572 eggs were obtained during this cruise. CORYSTES Cruise 08/2008: A total of 104 stations were sampled. Fish eggs in early development stages 1A and 1B and between 1.10 and 1.75mm diameter were removed and individually preserved in ethanol. A total of 1614 eggs were obtained during this cruise. CORYSTES Cruise 15/2008: A total of 104 stations were sampled. Fish eggs in early development stages 1A and 1B and between 1.10 and 1.75mm diameter were removed and individually preserved in ethanol. A total of 110 eggs were obtained during this cruise.
