Metadata: North West Jones Bank Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) Survey Infauna Data - 2012
Abstract:
Two surveys took place in the North West Jones Bank Marine Conservation Zone in 2012: Guardline Survey 29/02/2012 to 31/03/2012 as part of the ITT Lot 6 29 samples collected using the Day Grab 7 samples collected using the Mini Hammon Grab Cefas survey CEND 1012 11th July to 15th July 8 samples collected The data were collected for the Marine Conversation Zones Project funded by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Guardline Survey 29/02/2012 to 31/03/2012 The vessel’s sampling area was pre-cleaned using a powerful deck fire-hose and seawater. A dry-core, galvanised-steel cable was used to lower the grab to the seabed. For accuracy of grab sampling in depths greater than 90m the grab was pre-winched down so that it was approximately 10-15 metres from the seabed. Communication between the deck, bridge crew and the surveyors was conducted by means of VHF radio. When directly over the sampling station the grab was winched to the seabed and quickly recovered so that the sample could be obtained and the apparatus returned to the pre-deployment position. Positional fixes were taken for each grab sample immediately following the grab reaching the sea floor. The precise time that the grab reached the seabed was determined by observations of the tension on the winch cable. The vessel offset of grab deployment was used to represent the position of the sampler. Grab samples deemed acceptable for analyses were photographed and described prior to sub-sampling. Cefas survey CEND 1012 11th July to 12th July The grab system comprised a 0.1 m2 mini Hamon grab fitted with a video camera (Figure 6), the combined gear being known as a HamCam. This allowed an image of the undisturbed seabed surface to be obtained for each grab sample. Samples were collected from anywhere within a 100 m radius bullring centred on the target location. On recovery, the grab was emptied into a large plastic bin and a representative sub-sample of sediment (approx. 0.5 litres) taken for Particle Size Analysis (PSA). |
