Metadata: 2013, Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA), Chichester Harbour, Solent Maritime EMS, Zostera seagrass bed extents
Abstract:
Following Defra's revised approach to the management of fisheries within European Marine Sites, Zostera seagrass beds were identified as a red risk which required management measures by the end of 2013. Within the Sussex IFCA district, there are four seagrass beds in Chichester Harbour which is part of the Solent Maritime European Marine Site (EMS). To bring in spatial closures on these beds, they were surveyed in the summer of 2013 to obtain the most up-to-date extent data. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust last mapped the beds between 2006-2009 and they assisted Sussex IFCA officers in collaboration with Chichester Harbour Conservancy to re-map the extents. The perimeter of the beds where the coverage was more than 5 percent was mapped on foot with a GPS at low water spring tides. Regular georeferenced photographs were taken (about every 20m) and field notes were written to record coverage variation and species. The beds included Zostera noltii, Z. angustifolia and Ruppia maritima. The GPS tracks were uploaded into GoogleEarth and used to inform the management polygons.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Tracks walked under training from experienced surveyors, photos taken at regular intervals. Main bed extent delineated at more than 5 percent density of areas less than 10m apart. Accuracy limited by GPS accuracy estimated to be within 6m. |
