Metadata: A FISP Project Working to Mitigate the Impacts of Climate Change on UK Whelk Fisheries
Abstract:
There were two elements to the project; to understand the biological responses of whelk to marine heatwaves, and reconstructing temperature profiles using stable isotopes for growth rate analyses. These objectives were to allow an understanding of the interaction between whelk, a commercially important species, and the anticipated changes in marine heatwaves and sea bottom temperature for the present (2003 - 2022), near (2040 - 2059) and far - future (2079 - 2098) period. Two data collection methods were employed for each respective component, including simulating marine heatwaves of different intensities and durations in aquaria to assess mortality, righting time and behaviour of whelk. The latter part of the project required collecting stable isotope data from whelk shells from three sites (Shetland, Nefyn and Jersey), varying over a latitudinal gradient. Temperature profiles for individual whelk were produced and analysed.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | To understand biological responses of whelk to marine heatwaves, whelk were divided into four separate, temperature – controlled systems in an aquaria, such as 40 whelk experienced one of four heatwave scenarios, varying in intensity and duration. Eighty whelk remained in the control system, where no heatwave was simulated. The experiments were repeated three times with new whelk for each iteration. Data for behaviour were collected through taking daily photographs and assigning behaviours which were then compared between scenarios. Righting experiments were conducted multiple times throughout the three experimental replicates. Mortalities were noted. To understand the interaction of temperature and whelk in their natural environment and between locations, whelk shells were drilled using specialised drill bit and cleaning protocol. Samples were processed at British Geological Survey (BGS), using mass spectrometry to calculate stable isotope d18O values for each drilled shell sample (d18Os). Temperature estimations were derived from isotope values using a paleotemperature equation and site-specific water isotope values (d18Ow) (Hollyman et al., 2020). Temperature profiles were then reconstructed using hourly sea bottom temperature (SBT) data. Growth rates were calculated and compared between locations.
