Metadata: Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm: Stage 1 Archaeological Assessment of CPT and Borehole Logs
Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Centrica Renewable Energy Ltd. to undertake an archaeological Stage 1 borehole and Cone Penetrometer Test (CPT) assessment of 40 boreholes and logs recovered from the proposed Race Bank offshore wind farm site. The Stage 1 assessment of the CPT and borehole logs investigated the sedimentary sequence within the wind farm area and evaluated the geoarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental potential of sediments from the site. The following six sedimentary units were interpreted from the borehole and CPT logs; Unit 6: Chalk (Cretaceous bedrock), Unit 5: Sand, gravel and clay (glacial sediments), Unit 4: Laminated clay (lagoon / shallow marine sediments), Unit 3: Gravelly sand (marine sediment), Unit 2: Gravelly sandy clay (glacial till), Unit 1: Peat and clay, shelly gravelly sand (Holocene terrestrial and marine sediments). Of these, it is considered possible that Unit 4, Unit 3 and Unit 1 have the potential to contain both in situ archaeological and palaeoenvironmental material. This includes prehistoric deposits and artefacts, and, in the case of Unit 1, modern archaeological material e.g. shipwrecks. The report makes proposals for the Stage 2 archaeological recording of 24 samples from 9 boreholes in order to evaluate the prehistoric archaeological potential of the site.
