Metadata: 2024 Marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment programme (mNCEA) St Kilda survey: Imagery data
Abstract:
The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), in collaboration with the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI), conducted an offshore seabed survey on the Scottish Continental Shelf (OSPAR Region III - Celtic Seas) in September / October 2024, under the marine Natural Capital and Ecosystems Assessment (mNCEA) programme. Imagery data (video and still images) were collected using a Cathx R300 camera camera system mounted on a camera sledge at St Kilda and Stanton banks and a drop camera frame at stations in Stanton banks survey area. The video data has been analysed for habitats and species and is undergoing QA/QC. This data will be made available via DASSH in due course. The stills data has not yet been analysed.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | A camera sledge frame and drop frame camera were used on this survey. Both frames were mounted with the same camera system and ~24 hours were required to swap camera systems between the two frames. For both camera frames video and still imagery was recorded using a Cathx R300 camera, with the image illuminated using 4 lamps, and scaling provided by two red point lasers. Lense: F2.0, 17.2 mm. Video was recorded at 30 fps in a .avi format. Five JPEG screenshots were collected from the video feed every second. Camera sledge: The Cathx R300 camera was mounted on the sledge frame at a 45 degree angle with the centre of the lens at a height of 750 mm, when measured from the deck. Lasers were set at 862 mm to create a “gate” that can be used to more accurately record densities of objects that pass between the laser points. The camera sledge was deployed from the stern of RV Corystes and towed along the seabed at a target speed of 08 – 1 knots for 15 minutes. A USBL positioning system was used to record an accurate position of the sledge. Drop frame: The Cathx R300 camera was mounted on the drop frame at a 65.5 degree angle with the centre of the lens at a height of 465 mm, when measured from the deck . Lasers were set at 200 mm. The drop frame camera was deployed from the side of RV Corystes and towed along the seabed at a target speed of 08 – 1 knots for 15 minutes. No USBL positioning was available for the drop frame, and the position of the camera is assumed to be closer to the position of the vessel for the deployment of this equipment. Video Analysis: The drop frame camera data analysis was undertaken by SeaStar Survey Ltd and analysis of the Camera Sledge data by APEM Ltd. The image annotation platform BIIGLE was used. Analysis and internal/external QA was conducted in line with the North-East Atlantic Marine Biological Analytical Quality Control schemes (NMBAQC) Epibiota interpretation guidelines (Turner et al. 2016) and Epibiota Quality Assurance (EQA) framework and according to a specification set out by JNCC. Results were provided in a MEDIN compliant Excel proforma spreadsheet and have undergone further internal QC by JNCC. The still images have not yet been analysed |
