Metadata: 2014 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) biological analyses of Marine Scotland Science (MSS) Moray Firth benthic camera survey
Abstract:
The main aim of this investigation in the Moray Firth off Banff, Aberdeenshire was to improve knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of the species and habitats of recognized conservation importance. This site was selected for survey as it is a proposed renewable energy location. A drop-down video survey of benthic habitats was undertaken by MSS at 1 site on the 19th July 2014 on board the MSS vessel MRV Alba na Mara (cruise 1214A). SNH analysis of this seabed video and still photographic imagery is used to describe the nature of the seabed in terms of the physical structure and the species assemblages. Runs and run segments were assessed for the presence of protected features and other PMFs, as well as for the presence of species and habitats of recognised conservation importance.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This subtidal seabed data from Moray Firth was collected during a research cruise by MSS on board the MRV Alba na Mara (cruise 0614A) on the 19th July 2014. This data were collected as part of a survey carried out at a number of proposed renewable energy locations, including Armadale on the north Scottish coast and at a number of North Sea locations off Fraserbourgh, Peterhead (Cruden Bay) and Aberdeen (Kincardine). Video images were obtained from 1 drop-down video drift. Track position and depth data were displayed on a SD video overlay system. HD video footage was recorded at a resolution of 1920x1080. The camera frame also carried a vertically orientated digital stills camera which took photographs of the seabed at intervals, and a laser scaling system. This dataset were derived from biological analyses of MSS video footage undertaken by SNH contractor Dr Colin Moore. The purpose of this video footage analyses was to describe the physical structure and species assemblages present. Species present were identified and quantified using the semi-quantitative MNCR SACFOR scale, as far as possible. Biotopes were allocated based on the biological and physical attributes. Where the video run traversed a sequence of biotopes, the run is split into corresponding segments with the transition points recorded using the time, position and depth. |
