Metadata: Understanding the biological responses of the common whelk, Buccinum undatum, to marine heatwave scenarios simulated in an aquarium setting
Abstract:
Biological response data including mortality, behaviour and righting time data for the common whelk, Buccinum undatum, during various marine heatwave scenarios. Intensity, described as the maximum temperature compared to the seasonal baseline, and duration were the MHW characteristics of focus and reproduced in aquaria. Three iterations of the experiment were conducted between 22nd June 2024 to 19th September 2024.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Two hundred and forty whelk were used in each iteration of the experiment, a total of 720 altogether. All experiments took place in temperature - controlled aquaria. For each experimental repeat, eighty whelk remained in a control system at a baseline temperature of 15 °C and no heatwave occurred. The remaining 160 whelk were placed across three separate systems, such that groups of 40 whelk were exposed to one of four heatwave scenarios; Strong Long and Strong Short (maximum temperature of 21°C for 9 and 5 days respectively) and Moderate Long and Moderate Short (maximum temperature of 19 °C for 10 and 5 days respectively). Temperatures were increased and decreased by 2 °C increments prior to and after maximum temperatures. Systems were closed and fitted with a temperature controller which worked with a 500 A chiller and 1KW heater. A protein skimmer, double UV steriliser and biofilter ensured good water quality, which was monitored by conducting water quality tests. The biological data recorded included behavioural responses, quantified by taking daily photographs and assigning a behaviour to each individual whelk. Mortalities were also recorded. Behavioural data were analysed by calculating the proportion of each behaviour exhibited for each day of the experiment and mortality data were analysed for significant differences between treatments. Righting trials were conducted on day 0, day 6, day 12 and day 17 of each experiment. Whelk were removed from tanks and orientated to have an upwards facing operculum and retracted foot. The time taken for the foot to touch the base was recorded over a period of 20 minutes. Data were analysed by calculating the proportion of whelk that righted within five time bins ranging from under a minute to no – response. Data analyses and project completion is still in process.
