Metadata: 2007 Natural England (NE) Ribble Estuary Littoral Sediment Condition Assessment SSSI
Abstract:
A condition assessment of the Ribble Estuary. The report contains both habitat and biotope analysis of the SSSI displayed in the form of detailed GIS polygon and point layers. The report also contains digital stills of typical habitats and biotopes found within the survey area. The survey work was undertaken over the following dates: 11th October â?? 13th October 2007 and 22nd October â?? 23rd October 2007.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The survey was undertaken by a team of 2 surveyors using a hovercraft platform. Transects were located using Thales Mobile mapper GPS based on positions of previous work. At each habitat, the substratum and dominant/characteristic species were identified. Sediment was sampled (device and device size unknown) and infaunal species were collected using a 0.5mm mesh sieve. In order to facilitate identification, a representative sample of fauna was collected in sample pots for subsequent laboratory identification. No specific device name or area/size noted; only 'sample pot'. Photographs of the area, habitats and characteristic species were taken at each survey site then corss-referenced with the survey notes and GPS positions. Sediment characteristics were observed using a rapid infield assessment technique. Sediment characteristics included type, water content, presence and depth of anoxic layer and any other features of relevance e.g. frequency of shell debris. Photographs of both the area, habitats and where possible characteristic species were taken at each survey site and were cross-referenced with the survey notes and GPS positions. In addition supplementary information was also recorded e.g. surface features, indication of natural or anthropogenic impact impacts recorded (i.e. blown sand, moving drainage channels, vehicle tracks, diggings, etc). This information was then used to assign a biotope code to each habitat. It was agreed that the transects surveyed in the 2005 monitoring programme by Royal Haskoning (2006) would be re-surveyed with additional transects mapped to increase the coverage of the site. |
