| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Intertidal species abundance data from a structured survey of the shore of Hannafore point including Looe Island, cornwall. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Four days were spent surveying Hannafore Point and the last day concentrated on Looe Island. At the start of the survey a datum point was established at grid reference SX225523 and permanently marked with a masonry nail driven into the sea wall at this point. Compass bearings of 90 degrees, due east were then used to form the baseline along the upper shore. Every 50 m along the baseline was marked using bolts set into the rock pinning conspicuous PVS tags. Where the substrate was unsuitable for the attachment of these markers the position was moved to a suitable location (a maximum of 2 m) and the deviation noted. Lines were then run down the shore from these markers on a bearing of 180 degrees and marked every 50 m in the same way to create a 50 m x 50 m grid covering an area of 200 m to the south and 300 m to the east of the datum point. The resulting 50 m squares were referenced using letters eastwards and numbers southwards for ease of identification. This method enabled squares to be added to the main grid system when tidal levels prevented other survey work.SurveyThe survey team was split into small groups and each group assigned to a different 50 m square. General descriptions of the dominant organisms, together with the types of habitat present within the square were recorded. Sketches were made and photos taken of the grid square to provide a permanent record of the general appearance of the different parts of the shore. Plants and animals present in the squares were recorded using checklists. |
