Metadata: 2015 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Sound of Mull benthic camera survey
Abstract:
Survey of benthic habitats within and Sound of Mull, which forms part of the Loch Sunart to Sound of Jura MPA. This survey was undertaken by SNH and Marine Scotland Science (MSS) for SNH on the 24th and 25th September 2015 on board the vessel MRV Alba na Mara (cruise 1415A). Video images were obtained from drop-down video drifts at 11 sites. The main aims of this survey were to monitor MPA management effectiveness and contingency sampling to improve knowledge and distribution of species and habitats of recognised conservation importance. The video and still imagery was used to describe the nature of the seabed in terms of the physical structure and the species assemblages. The presence of protected features (PFs) was recorded for all video samples within the MPA and the presence of priority marine features (PMFs) for all video samples.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This subtidal seabed data from Sound of Mull was collected by SNH and MSS on board MRV Alba na Mara on the 24th and 25th September 2015, covering the areas of the Loch Sunart and Sound of Jura MPA. This data were collected at 11 stations using a drop-down video system. The video camera frame carried a laser scaling system and the facility to take digital still photographs at regular intervals. A HD (1920x1080) camera was deployed in combination with a lower resolution navigation camera (720x576). Analyses of the video footage was undertaken by SNH contractor Dr Colin Moore to describe the physical structure and species assemblages present. Species present were identified and quantified using the semi-quantitative MNCR SACFOR scale, as far as possible. Biotopes were allocated based on the biological and physical attributes. Where the video run traversed a sequence of biotopes, the run is split into corresponding segments with the transition points recorded using the time, position and depth. |
