Metadata: FISP Filling the Gap Project 2022-2024
Abstract:
The Filling the Gap Crustacean FISP is a collaborative research project led by Seafish, Bangor University, Devon and Severn IFCA, and the industry-led Crab and Lobster Management Group. The project has four workpackages (WP): WP1: Improving understanding of the landings structure of brown crab fisheries within English and Welsh waters. No data was collected for this workpackage, it used existing datasets. WP2: Understanding the size structure of crustacean populations, and the environmental, spatial, temporal and fisher behaviour factors that can affect the size structure of landings data. Data collected: Size composition data of brown crab and European lobster onboard commercial fishing vessels across Wales. Interviews with commercial crustacean fishers in wales on changes in their fishing practises overtime. WP3: Assessing the potential benthic impacts of crab and lobster pots on habitats of conversation importance. Data collected: Quadrat and transect data from ecological dive surveys conducted at high- and low-intensity pot fishing sites in North Wales. These were performed to assess the benthic impacts of pot fishing and its subsequent effects on the abundance and size of benthic species in the area. WP4: Defining and developing an enforceable method to determine a soft-shelled crab. Data collected: Commercial potting boat surveys targeting Cancer pagurus/brown crab in South Devon, to trial and develop a credible methodology for assessing the softness of a brown crab shell using durometer measurements in collaboration with fishers in the Devon and Severn IFCA district. Laboratory dissections to analyse the relationship between Cancer pagurus/brown crab shell hardness and meat yield.
Data holder:
Bangor University School of Ocean Sciences
Use constraints:
This project clollected commercially sensitive informative e.g., volume of catch and fishing locations. Therefore some aspects of the project cannot be shared wider than the Bangor University Fisheries Team, due to data sharing agreements with fishers.

| Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 2394 |
| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | FISP Filling the Gap Project 2022-2024 |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | a03fe584592c40de1aa5a790d73911ac |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | FISP_Filling_the_gap_Bangor_2024 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2022-01-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2024-12-31 |
| Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |
