Metadata: DAERA Northern Ireland Intertidal Marine Protected Area Monitoring 2002 - Present
Abstract:
Northern Ireland has statutory obligations to protect marine species and characteristics. This is achieved through a network of designated regions called Marine Protected Areas (MPA), where destructive activities are managed and restricted. To meet these obligations, species and their habitats are monitored so that the Department can inform on effectiveness of site management. The data here refers specifically to monitoring of the intertidal zone, and includes species lists with associated abundance data, and JNCC Habitat Classifications using biotopes. This monitoring programme adheres to the following national, EU and international legislation: the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, (amendment) 1995; the Conservation (Natural Habitats, etc.) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1995 (as amended); Environment (Northern Ireland) Order 2002; Wildlife and Natural Environment Act (2011); The Marine Act (Northern Ireland) 2013; Marine Strategy and Framework Directive (MSFD); Water Framework Directive (WFD); UN Convention on Biodiversity and OSPAR.

| Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 2402 |
| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | DAERA Northern Ireland Intertidal Marine Protected Area Monitoring 2002 - Present |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | a0d4acb13503d29634f6df5a426d96e2 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | DAERA-ITE-MPA-MON |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2002-01-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2020-02-18 |
| Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | annually |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The designated features of MPA's are monitored by surveying the intertidal zone to identify biotopes and species. While most species are identified in the field, some are taken back for identification with a microscope. The team is NMBQAC accredited for macroalgae identification. Species identifcation and biotopes are supported by photographs. |
