Metadata: 1998-2000 Stour and Orwell Estuaries Unicomarine Limited macrobenthos survey
Abstract:
Marine benthic species abundance data from ecological survey of the Stour and Orwell estuaries. Trial placements of dredged fine sediment were undertaken, during the winter of 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, at several sites in the Stour estuary. Unicomarine Ltd carried out three macrobenthos surveys to assess the impact of sediment replenishment on fauna. The first survey was carried out in October 1998, stations were sampled round the placement site with additional reference stations further away from the placement site (39 stations in total). The survey was repeated in April 1999, after placement of sediment over the winter of 1998-1999, and again in May 2000 after a second placement of sediment. During the 2000 survey 43 stations were sampled including three additional reference stations towards the banks. In 1999 there was an increase in coarse material, compared with 1998, and some species associated with stones were more common. In 2000 the sediment data indicated that production of coarse sediment was similar to 1998 but the amount of silt/clay material had increased slightly, as would be expected from the fine sediments deposited in the area. The dominant community groups, biotopes and taxa found were similar for all surveys and there was little change in total numbers of taxa and individuals between years. Two major community groups were discernible in all years. Minor changes in community structure could be traced from year to year and related to fluctuating populations of dominant taxa. The reasons for the small changes could not be confidently identified. Some were clearly the result of changes in the sediment regime but it is not clear whether those changes may have been a result of sediment placement or of natural fluctuations.
