Metadata: 2026 ABPmer/Natural England Allonby Bay Highly Protected Marine Area (HPMA) Intertidal habitat mapping survey (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle/drone imagery)
Abstract:
Intertidal habitat map of the Allonby Bay Highly Protected Marine Area (HMPA), derived from UAV (drone) RGB imagery and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data collected in September 2024, using unsupervised imagery classification. Habitats mapped as polygons representing broadscale habitats and biotopes, classified according to the JNCC Marine Habitat Classification (v22.04). Limitations include an estimated 2 m positional offset in the ortho-mosaics and limited ground-truthing data. Habitats defined using expert judgement, with confidence assessed based on proximity to ground-truthing data, data quality, and level of biotope assignment.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Survey data from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Red–Green–Blue (RGB) imagery collected on 19–20 September 2024 (six flight areas; 88.85 ha) and airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) were used to derive intertidal habitat map polygons for the Allonby Bay Highly Protected Marine Area (HMPA), with imagery processed by Natural England in Pix4D to ortho-mosaics (EPSG:27700) and mapping undertaken in ArcGIS Pro using an unsupervised Iso Cluster classification.
