Metadata: 2012 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Loch Fyne and Clyde Sea benthic camera and infaunal grab survey
Abstract:
The main aim of this investigation in Loch Fyne and Clyde Sea was to improve knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of the species and habitats, especially PMFs. A drop-down video survey and a grab survey of benthic habitats was undertaken by SNH from the 12th to 18th March 2012. Underwater video footage was collected using DDV camera system at 108 sites in Loch Fyne, Inchmarnock, Arran, Kilbrannan Sound and Clyde Sill. Analysis of seabed video and still photographic imagery is used to describe the nature of the seabed in terms of the physical structure and the species assemblages. Runs and run segments were assessed for the presence of protected features and other PMFs, as well as for the presence of species and habitats of recognised conservation importance. On the same survey, SNH collected grab samples for infaunal analysis at 28 stations in the Clyde Sea for Marine Scotland. The SEPA vessel Sir John Murray was used for this survey work.

Video images were obtained from 108 drop-down video drift tows. Track and depth data are available from a video overlay system. No HD footage was recorded on this survey. SNH contracted Dr Colin Moore to analyse the video footage to describe the physical structure and species assemblages present. Species present were identified and quantified using the semi-quantitative MNCR SACFOR scale, as far as possible. Where video runs traversed a sequence of biotopes, the runs are split into corresponding segments with the transition points recorded using time. Segmentation of runs was not practicable in the case of mosaics of recurring biotopes, in which case all biotopes observed were simply listed. Runs and run segments were assessed for the presence of PPFs and other PMFs, as well as for the presence of species and habitats of recognised conservation importance according to a number of additional criteria, including citation on the following lists: the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (lower risk category), the OSPAR List of Threatened and/or Declining Species and Habitats and the Scottish Biodiversity List. Grab samples were collected at 28 stations, undertaken over the same survey period as drop down video. At each station, a single grab was collected using a 0.1m2 Day grab. A total of 28 infaunal samples were collected during the survey, once onboard each infaunal sample was passed through a 1mm mesh sieve and the infaunal sieve residue retained and fixed with buffered formalin for subsequent analysis. A small sub-sample of the grab was removed for PSA analysis and stored in plastic bags before being frozen. Precision Marine Limited were contracted by SNH to undertake infaunal analysis of the grab samples. This included infaunal identification, PSA, assigning of a biotope to each sample, and identification of protected features. All laboratory methodologies were based on best practice and Precision Marine Survey Ltd is a member of the NMBAQC. |
