Metadata: 1978 Diving survey of the substrates and benthic fauna of Dundrum Bay, Northern Ireland
Abstract:
Arctica Islandica, Echinus esculentus and Caryophyllia smitii presence records from Dundrum Bay. No latitude/longitudes were given so a point taken as the middle of each the two relevent faunal associations containing these species have been estimated from a map.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 1978 Diving survey of the substrates and benthic fauna of Dundrum Bay, Northern Ireland |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | f19b9fc11667319e349ef886835000b0 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | MRMLN0020000002D |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1978-07-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1978-07-31 |
| Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Subsection of data from a faunal survey investigating Dundrum Bay, Co. Down in July 1978. A total of 97 sites within the Bay were investigated despite bad weather conditions prevailing during the period of fieldwork. Full species lists were drawn up for each site and some quantitative work was carried out. Descriptions of bedform were obtained for each site and, where possible, sediment samples were collected for detailed investigation.dive team consisted of five experienced divers, diving activities being carried out under the "Code of Practice for Scientific Diving". Searches were carried out initially at random sites and later at predetermined positions. Positions were fixed by observing horizontal sextant angles from land marks. The epifauna and visible infauna were recorded, specimens were collected for identification, confirmation or as vouchers. Sediment samples were collected and details of bedform and trend were also recorded. Quantitative work was carried out utilising random 0.25 sq m quadrats with a suction pump for infauna, and random 10m x 2m transects for epifauna. Full species lists and sediment analysis is included in the reference paper. As part of the continuing faunal survey of the Irish Coast, the diving team of the Botany and Zoology department of the Ulster Musuem, supplemented by other personnel, investigated Dundrum Bay, Co. Down, in July 1978. A total of 97 sites within the Bay were investigated despite bad weather conditions prevailing during the period of fieldwork. Full species lists were drawn up for each site and some quantitative work was carried out. Descriptions of bedform were obtained for each site and, where possible, sediment samples were collected for detailed investigation. The dive team consisted of five experienced divers, diving activities being carried out under the "Code of Practice for Scientific Diving". Dives and searches were carried out initially at random sites and later at predetermined positions. Positions were fixed by observing horizontal sextant angles from land marks. On site, the epifauna and visible infauna was recorded, specimens were collected for identification, confirmation or as vouchers. Sediment samples were collected and details of bedform and trend were also recorded. Quantitative work was carried out utilising random 0.25 sq m quadrats with a suction pump for infauna, and random 10m x 2m transects for epifauna. Details of sediment analysis is included in the paper. Six major "faunal associations" were found in the bay, the locations of these are given on a map but no latitude/longitude is provided. The two faunal associations which included species relevevant to the Irish Sea Pilot are: 1. Sublittoral Sand Association 2. Sublittoral Rock/Boulder/Cobble Association A point taken as the middle of each the two relevenat faunal associations have been estimated from a map and included in Marine Recorder. Bounding box has been estimated on map |
