Metadata: 2018, EDF Renewables, Blyth Demonstration Site, Bird and Marine Mammal Monitoring Array 2 (Year 1)
Abstract:
Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Ltd (BODL) is developing an offshore wind demonstration site off the Northumberland Coast close to the Port of Blyth. The Blyth Offshore Demonstration project (the “Project”) was subject to an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as reported in an Environmental Statement (ES) (NaREC, 2012). Subsequently the Project received a Marine Licence [L/2013/00303 as amended] from the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) to develop and operate the demonstration site subject to satisfying a number of conditions within the Licence. The report in this series covers Array 2, the first array to be built. The purpose of this document is to report on the results of the first year of post-construction surveys that have been undertaken in March-October 2018 for the Ornithological and for the Marine Mammal Monitoring Programmes that are being implemented to satisfy these licence conditions, for the first phase of the development, the inner (inshore) array of turbines (termed ‘Array 2’ in the ES).

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The main transect surveys required to satisfy the marine licence were conducted following the guidance of the standard Seabirds at Sea methodology (Komdeur et al., 1992) and the COWRIE (Camphuysen et al., 2004) guidance on seabird census techniques, maintaining the surveys using the same methods as previously for consistency. Two surveys per month were undertaken through the main period of interest for auks (March-October). Analysis of the ES/SEI baseline data showed that this period captures 92% guillemots, 93% razorbills and 98% puffins (as well as 94% gannets). Surveys were conducted using a Visual Line Transect method with sub-bands and with snapshots for flying birds. Detailed information on species, sex, and where feasible, foraging behaviour and flying height, were recorded. The 2018 marine mammal surveys followed the same methods as used in the ES baseline surveys, with a dedicated marine mammal observer scanning a 180° arc looking forward from the survey vessel. The survey details and transect route were as described above in relation to the bird surveys, which were carried out simultaneously. The positions of all animals encountered relative to the survey vessel were recorded, with information on species, number and behaviour. The survey team comprised a single dedicated marine mammal surveyor on the survey vessel (sufficient given the low level of marine mammal activity recorded previously in the survey area and in 2018). |
