Metadata: 2012, RPS, Lincs Offshore Wind Farm, Second Interim Boat-based Bird Survey (August - October 2012)
Abstract:
Ornithological boat-based surveys have been conducted to inform of any changes to the abundance and distribution of species between the pre-construction and during-construction periods of the Lincs/LID6 Wind Farm. This interim report presents the results of the surveys during the period August to October 2012, which formed part of the Year 2 Construction period. In general, estimated numbers in 2012 were largely similar to those found in previous years within this period, and where there were some differences (e.g. Sandwich tern, razorbill), it could not be determined with any confidence that this was due to the presence of Lincs/LID6 construction activities or part of a wider natural variation in numbers. There was however no clear evidence that any key species have been adversely affected by such construction activities. This information will form part of a more comprehensive Year 2 Construction period annual report, which will statistically test for any changes in the abundance and distribution of species in relation to the Lincs/LID6 construction activities.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Surveys were based on the boat transect survey method recommended by COWRIE (Camphuysen et al. 20041). Each survey consisted of a line-transect route to survey birds on the water during which regular snapshots are taken to survey flying birds. Counts, flight heights and flight directions (where applicable) were recorded for each species. Additional information regarding, age, sex, plumage and behaviour was recorded wherever possible. There were two modifications to the standard COWRIE methodology that were employed to improve data quality: (i) Forward scanning using high quality binoculars (as opposed to by eye) was undertaken to improve detection of divers and sea-duck that are known to flush from the sea surface at considerable distance from the vessel; and (ii) Two 90° line transects were operated simultaneously wherever possible, |
