Metadata: 2000-2003, Garrad Hassan and Partners Ltd., Assessment of the Proposed Gunfleet Sand Offshore Wind Farm
Abstract:
Enron Wind Overseas Development Ltd instructed Garrad Hassan and Partners Ltd to conduct an independent assessment of the wind climate and expected energy production at the offshore wind farm of Gunfleet Sands near Clacton-on-Sea. Wind data was recorded at Gunfleet Sands Lighthouse for a period of approximately 2 years. Based on this recorded data, historical data recorded at Walton-on-the-Naze Meteorological Station and Harwich Haven authority meteorological mast it was concluded that the long-term mean wind speed is estimated to be 7.5 m/s at a height of 15.5m above. It is considered that the height of the anemometry above the platform of the lighthouse is insufficient for the wind speed measurements made to be clear from the influence of the lighthouse platform. An allowance has been made in the analysis reported here to account for the estimated effect on recorded wind speed. However, it is strongly recommended that another mast is installed on the Gunfleet Sand Lighthouse at a height of at least 15m above the lighthouse structure so a more accurate prediction of the long-term mean wind speed at the lighthouse can be determined.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Enron Wind Overseas Development Ltd instructed Garrad Hassan and Partners Ltd to conduct this study. A 60 m tall meteorological mast has been installed at the proposed offshore wind farm site, the location of which is shown in Figure 2.2. Details of the measurements recorded at this location and the grid co-ordinates of the mast are presented in Table 2.1. The height of the measurements refers to height above mean sea level. The mast is a square lattice tower mounted on a monopile foundation as shown in Figure 2.3. All instruments are mounted using 2 m horizontal square section booms. The instruments are connected to these booms using 0.7 m tubular vertical booms. The wind data have been recorded using Thies instruments throughout with Thies Classic anemometers and Thies Classic wind vanes. A data logger has been utilised, programmed to record 10 minute mean wind speed and direction and the standard deviation of wind speed and direction. |
