Metadata: 2006, ECON Ecological Consultancy, Lincs Offshore Wind Farm, Summary Report of Boat-based Ornithological Surveys of the Wash Estuary
Abstract:
The primary objective of the boat-based surveys of the Wash documented here was to broadly establish the summer distribution, abundance (population size and density) and activity of birds, especially breeding terns (Sandwich Sterna sandvicensis and Common terns Sterna hirundo) in relation to the proposed cable route corridor of the proposed Lincs offshore wind farm. The surveys also formed part of a wider survey programme to determine the relative use of the Wash by breeding terns, particularly Sandwich Terns, from the colonies at Scolt Head and Blakeney Point. It was concluded that even though evaluation through matrix analysis indicated clear potential for significant effects of the cable laying operations for the Lincs (and Docking and Race Bank proposed wind farms) upon the highly sensitive Sandwich Terns and Common Terns, there is no indication that this is at all likely to be realised. Sandwich Tern in particular generally avoided the area potentially occupied by the cable corridor. Consequently, there is no indication of anything other than minor or negligible short-term and reversible impacts upon any species. In the event, four of the proposed six surveys were completed with good coverage in June and July, accepting the survey of 1st July as equivalent of late June. The summary report and survey datasets are provided within this series.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | A provisional programme of six surveys was discussed with Michael Rooney of English Nature (now Natural England) on 13th April 2006. As with previous boat-based surveys in the Greater Wash area (e.g. of the proposed Lincs wind farm) surveys, an interval of least one week between surveys was required. In the event, four of the proposed six surveys were completed with good coverage in June and July, accepting the survey of 1st July as equivalent of late June. Unfortunately, no survey was completed in May as a result of contractual delays surrounding the vessels and no survey was conducted in August as a result of weather constraints and the cancellation of several proposed surveys. The survey period thus at least sampled the peak chick-rearing period of terns at the North Norfolk colonies where chicks had begun to hatch on May 25th, with the first chicks fledging on 28th June, and the bulk of chicks fledged and left by 20th July (Neil Lawton, warden of Scolt Head NNR, pers comm.). |
