As part of the analysis, further modelling studies were also undertaken to provide the necessary level of detail required to describe the variability in design and operating conditions across the proposed offshore wind farm site. Predictions of extreme return wave heights were required at representative locations in the wind farm site and for this purpose, a sufficiently long time series of data were required. These data sets were generated from two numerical wave models, the results of which were verified against two years of data gathered by the waverider buoy located on the northern edge of the project site. One of the wave models was regional and used for predicting waves that were developed by offshore winds blowing from the north around to the west and was driven by wind data derived from the Met Office model, but which was first calibrated against wind data gathered at the Gwynt y Môr met mast. The second wave model was local and was used for transforming waves entering the site from the west around to the north. It was driven by offshore waves predicted by the Met Office European wave model, which has a grid point located near to the northern edge of the wind farm site. The small contribution from locally-generated waves in this second model was also predicted by applying the previously calibrated Met Office wind data. |
