Metadata: 2005-2006, Maritime Archaeology Ltd., Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm, Archaeological Desk Based Assessment
Abstract:
This project considers archaeological studies that have taken place at the site of the Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm. The Phase One maritime archaeological desk based assessment results are used as a basis for recommendations for mitigation in relation to the development. Desk based research has revealed evidence of archaeological sites and finds, and has assessed bore hole, cartographic and documentary information from within the study area. These data have helped identify the archaeological potential of the marine zone that will be impacted in the offshore wind farm area. The cable route to land and onshore works will be considered in a separate report, during Phase Two of the archaeological desk based assessment. The report considers the geomorphological and environmental context of the study area to assess the potential for the survival of submerged landscape deposits. Recent and historical variations in the character and morphology of the area have been examined through the study of marine charts and a review of modern use. Both known and potential archaeological sites have been presented in chronological sections. Each period review examines the potential for encountering archaeological remains or associated deposits in the course of development. Interpreted geophysical survey data has aided the assessment of the archaeological potential on the seabed. The data has been used to investigate the potential for submerged landscape deposits and the presence of wreck material.
