Metadata: 2015, Vattenfall, Kentish Flats Extension, Bathing Water Quality Report
Abstract:
The Kentish Flats Extension (KFE) Environmental Statement (ES) recognised that there is a slight risk associated with the re-suspension of sediments during cabling works which could lead to increases in bacterial concentrations of the water column resulting from release of sediment bacteria. This Bathing Water Quality Monitoring Report has been produced in order to discharge Licence Condition 13 (3) of Part 2 of Schedule 2 (Deemed Marine Licence under the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009) of the Kentish Flats Extension Order 2013, which reads as follows: “In the event that the installation of the export cable(s) takes place between May and September, bathing water quality shall be monitored and reported to the Environment Agency in accordance with a written protocol agreed in advance of such works taking place. The protocol shall include procedures for setting the bathing water quality baseline, details of the appropriate standards and the steps to be taken in the event that, as a result of the export cable works, bathing water quality falls below the agreed standards”. The closest designated bathing water to the project is at Herne Bay Central (lat/long: 51.37, 1.12; easting/northing: 617150, 168280) which is just under 1.5km east of the landfall at Hampton Pier (see Figure 1). The bathing water here ranges between the ‘sufficient’ and ‘good’ categories over 2011 to 2014 bathing seasons (note that these classifications are projected).

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | The Kentish Flats Extension (KFE) Environmental Statement (ES) recognised that there is a slight risk associated with the re-suspension of sediments during cabling works which could lead to increases in bacterial concentrations of the water column resulting from release of sediment bacteria. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The Environment Agency undertake sampling at each bathing water 20 times during the season, between 15th May and 30th September each year. Samples are analysed within 24 hours by the National Laboratory Services (NLS) and presumptive results are emailed across within 48 hours. If an exceedance is detected, a reactive sample will be taken within a week in order to provide the best chance of identifying the source of pollution. At the time of planning the survey, the exact duration and location of works in the inter-tidal zone was not known and therefore it was estimated that it would take between 2 and 5 days to complete the cable installation. During consultation, the Environment Agency considered that compliance with the licence condition should form three surveys: a pre-construction survey, a survey during construction and a survey after construction works. |
