Metadata: 2011, Wessex Archaeology, Wrecks at Sea: Research in Context
Abstract:
There is potential for the discovery of shipwrecks dating back to the Mesolithic (over 10,000 years ago), and for aircraft crash sites from the last century. These wrecks can provide fascinating insights into trade, communication, combat, technology, economics and many other aspects of life and society. However, their location on the seabed leaves them vulnerable to impact from development activities such as aggregate dredging. Since its inception in 2002, the Marine Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund (MALSF) has proactively addressed issues around seabed impact, and has provided funding for a vast range of projects designed to lessen the impact of aggregate dredging on shipwrecks and aircraft crash sites. This volume explores these exciting projects within the context of marine historic environment research over the last decade, and illustrates how the projects not only promote best practice for the aggregate industry but are also accessible and relevant to a much wider audience.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2011, Wessex Archaeology, Wrecks at Sea: Research in Context |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 1bf06b38-ea51-4516-8f5a-0dd5e6e22fbd |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | MEPF 10/P152 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2011 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2011 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | unknown |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This monograph summarises the major contributions of the MALSF to the study of wrecks in the offshore areas of Britain. It provides a context for the research and not only highlights the exciting discoveries and results from the projects but also provides more general overviews of each project. The outreach and dissemination contributions are also showcased. Overall, this monograph illustrates the how the substantial body of MALSF-funded research has produced a ‘step-change’ in wreck investigation, understanding and preservation, and how it serves as an exemplar of best-practice. |
