Metadata: 2013-2015, Natural Power, Lashy Sound Tidal Site, Bird and Marine Mammal Surveys
Abstract:
Scotrenewables Tidal Power Ltd (SRTP) has been awarded an Agreement for Lease (AfL) for a commercial tidal energy project to be located at Lashy Sound between the islands of Eday and Sanday in Orkney. Lashy Sound is in close proximity to a number of designated sites for wildlife; the Calf of Eday Special Protection Area (SPA) is designated for internationally important numbers of breeding seabirds and the Sanday Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is designated for nationally important numbers of breeding harbour seals. A 24 month programme of baseline surveys was undertaken for the proposed Lashy Sound tidal array. The aim of these surveys was to characterise the use of the proposed SRTP development site by birds, marine mammals and basking sharks.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Surveys were undertaken between March 2013 and February 2015 from four Vantage Points (VPs): two on Eday and two on Sanday. All surveys were carried out by experienced ornithologists. Two methods were used to record the ornithology of the site: one to cover periods of slack tide (one hour either side of high and low water) and one to cover periods of peak flow (during the other four hours of the tidal cycle). During the summer months, eight hours were completed at each VP per month, with four hours focussed on peak flow and four hours focussed on slack tide. During the winter months six hours were completed at each VP per month, as the number of birds and marine mammals on site was less than in the summer. Four hours were focussed on peak flow and two hours were focussed on slack tide. |
