Metadata: 2011, Osprey, Zone 9 Celtic Array, Aviation Impact Assessment
Abstract:
The work presented in this series is an aviation operational impact assessment for the Centrica round 3 Irish Sea - Zone 9 Offshore Wind Farm Development project focusing on operations at RAF Valley and Warton Aerodrome. This study was produced by Osprey Consulting Services Limited (Osprey) with the purpose of assessing the potential impact the Windfarm might have on Radar services.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | The work presented in this series is an aviation operational impact assessment for the Centrica round 3 Irish Sea - Zone 9 Offshore Wind Farm Development project focusing on operations at RAF Valley and Warton Aerodrome. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Emanating from the ZAP process, Defence Estates has raised potential concerns about the impact a Wind Farm within the ISZ might have on the radar services provided by RAF Valley and Warton Aerodrome [Reference 2]. Such concerns have been based on the highest point of the turbine blades being no more than 192 metres above sea level as given in Reference 2. The entire zone shall be assessed for potential impact on RAF Valley and Warton Aerodrome. This document shall present the results of the assessment and determine if there are any grounds for objections and if so, how these may be mitigated. The assessment considers the impact of turbines once they are fully installed and gives no regard to any safety or operational issues relating to the construction, installation, through life support or visibility (e.g. lighting) of the turbines on the site. However, Osprey recommends that CERI considers the following information when assessing the safety of any installation, construction or maintenance phases with respect to aviation interests. Tall slender constructions such as wind turbines, despite their size, can be difficult to see from the air in certain weather conditions. Therefore, it is recommended that to facilitate safe visual flight in the vicinity of the turbine: - Appropriate information about the construction and its lighting should be promulgated in the UK Aeronautical Information Service (NATS AIS), for example the height and temporary location of construction cranes. |
