Metadata: 2004, ABP Mer, Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm, Metocean Assessment
Abstract:
This project details an assessment of wave, tide and seabed mobility to support engineering design requirements of the Gunfleet Sands Offshore Windfarm project. This assessment was carried out by ABPmer. Details are provided which specify conditions related to each of the proposed turbine installation sites This work was based on the best available data resource that includes a combination of site surveys and pre-existing data sets. For this assessment, ABPmer were asked to provide an evaluation of: extreme wave height conditions for 1:50 and 1:100 return periods, peak flow conditions with and without surge influences, and seabed level changes. The outcome of this assessment show that between 1985 and 2001 there have been key changes in the seabed level. Further seabed changes across the sandbank, in general, area likely. It would be prudent to re-survey the area at suitable intervals, and perhaps, initially, prior to construction, to develop further evidence of seabed stability. The outcome of this assessment also shows that the largest extreme waves are consistently predicted to occur along the south-east edge of the development site, with the highest waves generally encountered around turbine 19 (which is also in the general area of Thales South). This assessment also shows that strong winds can enhance tidal flows through wind-driven currents. The strong winds in this area are most likely to enhance this phase of tidal flows.
