Metadata: 2003, Celtic Wind Technology, North Hoyle, Phase 2 Bathymetric Survey
Abstract:
On the instructions of Vestas Wind Systems - Celtic Wind Technology Limited, Exploration associates carried out a survey of a 4000 by 1500m wide area over North Hoyle Bank, off the North Wales coast, for the purposes of designing and installing an offshore wind farm. Line spacing was set at 250m running parallel and perpendicular to the outline orientation of the windfarm. The objective of the survey was to evaluate global seabed movements during the winter months by providing a direct comparison of seabed levels with a previous survey conducted in July 2002 by Exploration Associates. This was achieved by carrying out a bathymetric survey utilising a dual frequency echo sounder. Survey work was conducted between 31st January 2003 and 12th February 2003 with seven full days being lost due to adverse weather conditions.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The North Hoyle Offshore Windfarm is the first of the UK's Round 1 wind farms. Due to the wind farm pre-dating the data clauses which The Crown Estate insert into all offshore windfarm leases, the offshore wind farm developer had no obligation to provide survey data to The Crown Estate. However, despite this, The Crown Estate are pleased to have worked with Innogy and Greencoat Capital to retrieve as much of the historical data as possible. All of the retrievable data can now be found on the MDE. Please see further details in the metadata lineage. The methodology involved vessel-based operations using advanced equipment such as the Leica SR530 GNSS/RTK GPS, Knudsen 320M Dual Frequency Echo Sounder, TSS HS50 Heave Sensor, and Trimble/HYDROpro navigation and positioning software, supplemented by regular calibrations and tide measurements via GPS and tide gauge. Despite occasional disruptions due to weather, the survey found a general northerly deepening of the seabed, stability of the sand bank at the specified grid reference, and no significant topographical changes compared to the previous survey. Equipment and system performance were assessed as reliable and accurate, and the survey recommends ongoing seabed monitoring and continued use of the specified technologies for effective hydrographic survey and construction support. No safety incidents were recorded. |
