Metadata: 2002, Wessex Archaeology, Lynn and Inner Dowsing, Maritime Archaeological Assessment
Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by AMEC Wind and Offshore Wind Power Limited to prepare an archaeological desk-based assessment of the potential impact upon archaeological remains from two proposed wind farm developments within an area of seabed off the East coast of Lincolnshire. Employing desk-based research, documentary analysis, marine geophysical surveys (including side-scan sonar and magnetometer data), field observation, consultations, and GIS studies, these projects identified a wide range of archaeological remains from prehistoric to post-medieval periods, as well as significant losses of vessels and aircraft dating from the 18th to 20th centuries. The findings underscore the region’s rich archaeological potential and continuous occupation, but also highlight the risk posed to historical and maritime assets by offshore infrastructure development. Recommended measures include the establishment of exclusion zones, rigorous ongoing monitoring, adherence to protocols such as the JNAPC Code of Practice, and implementation of detailed mitigation and reporting schemes to protect both known and undiscovered archaeological heritage throughout project planning and construction, ensuring compliance with best practice and relevant legislation.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The potential for archaeological material was assessed by reference to two areas surrounding the various elements of the development, referred to as the Marine and Coastal Study Areas. Information was sought from a wide range of local and national bodies. Data was provided by the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR), maintained by Lincolnshire County Council, the National Monuments Record (NMR) and by the UK Hydrographic Office. |
