Metadata: 2009, CEFAS, A generic investigation into noise profiles of marine dredging in relation to the acoustic sensitvity of the marine fauna in UK waters with particular emphasis on aggregate dredging: PHASE 1 Scoping and review of key issues
Abstract:
Author: CEFAS. Report number: Report08P21.This is a desk based study to identify the potential risks involved with noise produced during dredging operations with particular emphasis on marine aggregate extraction. The study aimed to analyse key issues such as dredging noise vs. hearing in marine life, identify areas with high ecological sensitivity with regards to aggregate dredging, outline open questions and suggest a methodology for a follow up study.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Characterisation of dredging noise. The task in this particular element is to draw a baseline by providing an overview of dredging related noise profiles. This shall be investigated by reviewing existing studies. The description shall include sound pressure levels as well as information on the coupling of sound and vibration to the sediment. • Comparative overview of dredging noise in relation to other marine noise sources. Here, other noise sources shall be investigated in order to place dredging noise in a wider context. • Outline of potential effects of dredging noise on marine life. This element shall be concerned with an outline of key issues to be considered with regards to hearing in marine life (e.g. what taxa shall be incorporated in the analysis). The section shall include an insight into the hearing systems of the relevant taxa (marine mammals, fish and invertebrates). • Outline of issues with regards to the spatial and temporal extent of dredging through an overview of UK dredging industry. This key part of the review shall describe the spatial and temporal scale of dredging operations off the UK coast in relation to the distribution of key taxa that have been identified in the previous element. The aim is to identify areas of high ecological sensitivity. • Summary of key issues to be looked upon. In this element, the results of the previous chapters shall be summarised, the key issues will be addressed and the remaining questions shall be outlined. • Outline of field study design. Based on the information compiled, the scope of a potential field study shall be outlined. The main methods for data collection and analysis shall be drawn out, as well as some information on the presentation of the results. |
