Metadata: 2012, GEO, Zone 3 - Dogger Bank, Geotechnical Survey (Tranche A and B)
Abstract:
Forewind Ltd. contracted GEO to conduct a geotechnical site investigation including seabed Piezo-Cone Penetration Testing (CPTU) at the planned Offshore Wind Farm at Dogger Bank. The worksite for the present campaign is primarily Tranche B of Dogger Bank Zone located in the UK part of the North Sea. 80 tests were performed in Tranche B and 8 tests performed in Tranche A. In total 88 deep push seabed CPTUs with a target depth of 40 metres below seabed were carried out. On 6 of the locations an additional test (re-run) was performed. The objective of this geotechnical investigation is to provide CPT data for Tranches A and B of the Dogger Bank Zone, part of the UK Round 3 wind farm development. The investigation is aimed at groundtruthing and integrating with the geophysical data to allow a 3D GEO-model to be developed. The geotechnical offshore activities were carried out from the vessel Blue Alfa between 2012.05.25 and 2012.06.08. The operations were conducted on a continual 24-hour basis. This ESRI ArcGIS shapefile is also supplied which represents the CPT locations and provides attribute information of the results.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Seabed deployed CPTs were carried out from Blue Alfa using GEOs in house 20 t seabed CPT-rig GEOscope. The overall GEOscope system dimensions are; base plate diameter 2.4 m, height 3.4 m with a ballast of approximately 27 ton providing 200 kN thrust at seabed. The rig was handled by GEOs modular launch/recovery system from the frame installed over the moon pool. The CPTs were conducted in accordance with the ISSMGE International Reference Test Procedure for CPT (IRTP 1999). Tip resistance, sleeve friction, porewater pressure and inclination of the cone were recorded during each test. The cones used were of the standard Van den Berg 60-degree type with cross sectional areas of 10 cm². The cone geometry, filter and sleeve diameter, joint-widths and rods were in agreement with the IRTP recommendations. On all tests a friction reducer has been applied. All cones were calibrated in accordance with the Contract Specification and GEO procedures. In total 10 CPT cones have been used on the project. On all tests a friction reducer has been applied. The basic CPT thrust system is a hydraulic dual clamp system, applying continuous penetration and full control of the total thrust applied to the CPT rods. The GEO cone penetration velocity was 20 mm/sec. A hydraulic control system maintained the penetration rates in accordance with the requirements. |
