Metadata: 2010-2011, Wessex Archaeology, Zone 9 Celtic Array, Phase 2 Archaeological Review of Geophysical Data
Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Centrica Energy Renewable Investments Ltd. (CERI) now Celtic Array, to undertake the archaeological assessment of the Round 3 Irish Sea Zone, This archaeological review of geophysical data represents Phase II of a four phase Zonal Appraisal and Planning (ZAP) process for the Irish Sea Zone, it is the archaeological review of geophysical data obtained by CERI/ Celtic Array , with the survey carried out by Marin Mätteknik AB (MMT) between February and August 2010. The data consisted of sidescan sonar, sub-bottom profiler (sparker), multibeam bathymetry and marine magnetometer data. This review included an assessment of these results in conjunction with historical data and a previous desk-based assessment for the Irish Sea Zone, which forms Phase II of the Zonal Appraisal and Planning process. The assessment focused on the potential for remnant land surfaces that may contain archaeological material relating to times of lower sea level, and the potential for the remains of maritime craft or aircraft of cultural heritage importance within the area that may be impacted upon by development within the Irish Sea Zone. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This work assessed the geophysical data acquired by MMT for CERI in order to identify, within the sample corridors, any material of archaeological interest lying within the limits of the zone; Facilitated archaeological interpretation of geotechnical investigations by using sub-bottom and bathymetric data -; Characterised the survey area and developed regional conclusions on the presence/absence, extent, period and form of material of archaeological interest, based on the interpretation of both the geophysical data and zonal Desk-Based Assessment , Identified evidence for palaeolandscapes ; And proposed future mitigation for material of archaeological interest within the survey areas 12 survey corridors spaced at 5km throughout the survey area were reviewed. Each corridor comprised of three survey lines (spaced at 150m intervals), totalling approximately 1335 line km of data, or approximately 12% of the total development area. A UKHO wreck and RCAHMW search was carried out prior to this review. Background information was obtained from the previous desk-based assessment (WA 2010a) and the MMT survey report (MMT 2011). |
